Kapellekensbaan - Chapel road

A unique mirror as Temple of Yourself...

Once upon a time; Flanders, Belgium was a collection of isolated islands around their churchtowers. Every person had their own function in these mini worlds where people rarely left town. You had local backers, butchers, carpenters, hardware stockists, metal workers... One thing those blacksmiths provided for the village, in small numbers but of pristine quality, design and craftsmanship were little chapels to worship the Holy Virgin in the conclusion of the house. As time passed by, mass religion faded and those truely unique, little house chapels lost their function and were trown away.
Along Flanders roads we were collecting them for 10 years and rewarded them with a new contemporary use by placing neatly shaped mirrors behind them, making them contemporary 'Temples of yourself'
Presenting them in single or in group we call them 'Kapellekensbaan' ('Chapel road') referring to the classic Flemisch book written in 1953 by the iconic writer 'Louis Paul Boon' (1912-1979) describing life on one of those little Flemisch island communities from times long gone.
